A mysterious, destroyed room. Diffused light streams in from a large window.

GEORGE:

Okay, I see it. Over there. I think we can still make it. Let’s go.

MARTHA:

Whoa, wait a minute…Which way?

GEORGE:

Over there, toward the light.

MARTHA:

Wait. That’s a window. We can’t go out through a window.

GEORGE:

It’s the only way out.

MARTHA:

No. Everybody knows you don’t head toward the light unless…

GEORGE:

Unless, what?

MARTHA:

You know…

GEORGE:

What are you saying?

MARTHA:

You don’t head toward the light unless you (whispering) unless you are going to die.

GEORGE:

What?

MARTHA:

I am not ready to die.

GEORGE:

Neither am I? I am just talking about getting out of this room.

MARTHA:

By jumping out the window? You don’t even know how far down it is. You don’t know what floor we are on.

GEORGE:

If we stay here we are going to die.

MARTHA:

And if we jump out of a window, we are going to die.

Wait what’s that down there? It’s another door. Let’s try that one

GEORGE:

Why?

MARTHA:

There’s no light.

GEORGE:

You would rather we go through a door leading to darkness than one leading to light?

MARTHA:

Yes. Let’s go

GEORGE:

No I’d rather take my chances with the light. Good luck.

(He exits toward the lit window, Martha waits a moment and heads the other way.  They stand in their respective exits. They look at each other. Then simultaneously step through.)
